10 Must-Play Cozy Games to Relax and Unwind on Your Nintendo Switch

Outside of books, video games tend to be a great source of relaxation for me. Growing up, I racked up an ungodly amount of hours playing video and computer games. I started young with the classics: Putt-Putt Saves the Zoo, Barbie as Rapunzel, Nancy Drew, My Little Pony, you get the picture.

I gradually moved up to a Game Cube, and my love for Animal Crossing and Mario Kart was discovered. I could write a whole post about Animal Crossing itself, but just know it’s a game I have loved since I was ten years old, and I play it to this day.

I’ve stuck with Animal Crossing for a multitude of reasons, but the main one is that it relaxes me. No jump scares or gory details. (I don’t mind watching play-throughs of these games; I’m just too chicken to play.)

Some games on this list may not be slow-paced or cozy enough for everyone’s liking, but personally, I find them all cozy in their way. I tend to look for games that feature great aesthetics, a well-crafted soundtrack, engaging dialogue, and a heartwarming story.

I hope you find something you enjoy, and if you have any cozy game recommendations, please share!!

P.S. – I will note which games are available on other platforms to enjoy 🙂

10 cozy video games to download on your Switch

  1. Animal Crossing: New Horizons

Animal Crossing: New Horizons, the latest entry in the beloved Nintendo series, takes you to a deserted island where you can unleash creativity by crafting, building, and customizing an island paradise.

With charming animal neighbors and a myriad of customization options, it’s a game that inspires creativity and provides a relaxing experience for hours and hours. (This game got me and several others through 2020.)

Bonus: Happy Home Paradise

The add-on is well worth it. Expand your design skills with Happy Home Paradise!

You get to visit an island where you work alongside a cute crew of animals to help design dream vacation homes. There are also several buildings to decorate on the island, like a cafe, clothing store, and school.

2. Stardew Valley

Stardew Valley is not just a farming simulation game where you look after crops and livestock. It goes beyond that, offering a delightful experience with its charming pixelated graphics, one of the best soundtracks ever, and some introspective dialogue.

The game opens with, “There will come a day when you feel crushed by the burden of modern life, and your bright spirit will fade before a growing emptiness.” I promise it’s not THAT deep.

You get to immerse yourself in countryside life, engage in fishing, mining, and cooking, and build relationships with the townspeople. (Sebastian main over here.)

3. Cozy Grove

The game Cozy Grove is about diving into this adorable island filled with ghosts trying to find peace. As a Spirit Scout, you are there to help these spectral beings in their quest for tranquility.

What really makes this game pop is its hand-drawn art style, which comes to life as you make progress in the game. The whole experience is visually stunning.

The backstories of these characters will have you falling in love and relating in some way or another. You can go at your own pace, and there is lots to explore in the little Cozy Grove.

4. Coffee Talk

Coffee Talk and its sequel, Coffee Talk Episode 2, are visual novels set in a nocturnal coffee shop in a fantasy version of Seattle. You play as a barista, serving warm drinks to various customers and listening to their stories.

The game’s tranquil, jazzy Lofi soundtrack set against a rainy backdrop and unique storytelling make it a soothing experience. Each customer comes with a backstory that you learn slowly by making them delicious drinks. I completed the first game in one day if that says anything about how much I loved it.

The sequel, Coffee Talk 2: Hibiscus & Butterfly, continues the story with some new characters and drinks to make. I loved everything about this game, too, and I hope another one is in the works soon!

Bandle Tale: A League of Legends Story is a crafting RPG set in the whimsical world of Bandle City. After a party goes wrong, the portals connecting your home collapse, throwing everything into chaos. Using your knitting magic and backpack house, restore the portals to reunite Bandle City.

I have never played A League of Legends game before, but this is pleasantly cozy and cute. It’s a very task-oriented game and can be confusing sometimes, but the aesthetics and characters are adorable.
